For many elderly Jews, the fall of the Communist system brought not only long-awaited political freedoms, but severe economical hardships. Meager pensions, eroded savings, crumbling health care system – so many troubles fell on their shoulders at the age when a person is so vulnerable and needs protection the most. Striving to ensure the dignity of their golden years, JDC has come up with the unique system of Heseds (named for the Hebrew word for “kindness, compassion or benevolence”) – community-based welfare centers that offer a full spectrum of assistance to elderly Jewish population. Heseds cover all the needs of elderly Jews providing home care, food packages, soup kitchen meals, medical consultations, medicines, warm clothes and many more. For many lonely pensioners, Heseds have also become centers of social interaction and links to the Jewish community.

Today our Heseds operate in Moscow, the Moscow Region and 16 cities of Central Russia supporting more than 50 thousand needy Jews in the Central Federal District.

	Home care program Home care workers visit the most elderly and sick people and help them to take care of themselves, to upkeep their residences and to interact with outer world.
	Food programs Elderly clients receive hot meals in Hesed soup kitchens and at home. Those who can cook receive food packages of food stamps for using in local supermarkets.
	Medical programs Purchase of life-saving medicines for clients suffering from grave chronic diseases, provision of rehabilitation equipment for injured and sanitary items for bedridden.
	SOS program One-time emergency assistance to clients in life-threatening or very grave situation: payment for surgeries, expensive medical treatments and medicines; basic household items etc.
	Winter relief Purchase of warm clothes, winter blankets and heating fuel for the most vulnerable elderly Jews. Assistance in preparing residences for the cold season.
	Club programs Hesed – based programs aimed at creative realization and national self-identification of elderly Hesed clients contribute to improving their quality of life.
	Bikur Holim The program organizes volunteer support for terminally ill clients; it provides psychological support for them and their families and trains volunteers to work with gravely ill.
